Coach happy with Resorters’ competitiveness

ELKHART LAKE — Entering the 2013-2014 boys basketball season, Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Resorter head coach Jim Brown believed the team would be competitive from the beginning of the season.

The team met the coach’s expectations.

“We had a great season. We finished 8-15 [overall] with the most wins here in over 10 years,” said Brown.

“What I am happiest with is we were in a position to win games most nights. We had a few tough games but for the most part we competed.”

Elkhart was only 2-14 in the CLC and 4-19 overall the previous season.

The Resorters finished seventh in the Central Lakeshore Conference with a 4-12 record and ended the season with a 38-28 Division 5 regional first-round loss to Living Word Lutheran (Jackson).

Brown said the season was highlighted by the team’s .500 record in the final 12 games of the regular season.

Three seniors, guard Antonio Bett, forward AJ Lallensack and guard John Kuhn, returned as starters from last season. Bett ended the season as the conference’s second leading scorer at 18.9 points per game and the No. 2 rebounder at 10.1 per contest en route to a unanimous first-team All-CLC selection. In addition, Bett was awarded Division 5 All-State honorable mention.

For the overall season, Bett led the Resorters in scoring with a 21.6 average; rebounding, 10.5 average; and three-point goals with 37.

“Bett had a great year,” said Brown.

Lallensack ended the season averaging 8.0 points.

“He was a steady influence and leader for us,” Brown noted.

Assistant coaches Jim De Vries and Mark Landgraf received special recognition from Brown.

“They are great assistant coaches. They do a ton behind the scenes – work that no one else sees,” said Brown.

Looking forward to the 2014- 2015 next season, Brown said the team will lose some quality seniors but the team has a solid nucleus to build on, acknowledging Trevor Taubenheim and Stephan Clemens as having solid junior seasons in 2013- 2014.

The entire team earned varsity letters this past season.
