MARJORIE JOAN SHAVER

Marjorie Joan Shaver, of Sheboygan Falls, passed from this life into eternal life on her 85th birthday, Monday morning, April 21, 2014, at Froedtert Hospital in Milwaukee. Last Wednesday morning, Marge suffered a stroke while preparing for a tea party for three generations of descendants at her home.

She was born in Sheboygan, Wis., on April 21, 1929, a daughter of the late Alva and Mary (Hopeman) Ten Haken. She graduated from Oostburg High School in 1947.

On March 30, 1948, she married John G. Shaver at her parents’ home in Hingham, Wis. In 1949, the first of their four children was born and Marge devoted her full time to raising them.

She worked as a cashier in the Hingham Grocery Store for several years in the 1970s. As an empty nester in 1981, she attended LTI to be certified as a nursing assistant. She then worked for almost 14 years for the VNA. She also served as the bookkeeper for Shaver Water Conditioning from 1981-90.

Marge’s passion was music. She played the clarinet and piano and loved to sing. She was a member of the choir in the Hingham Reformed Church for over 50 years, singing alto. In her later life, she joined two Sheboygan senior choirs, the Friendly Voices and the Golden Chordaliers. She was also active in numerous women’s groups at the Hingham Reformed Church.

Marge loved to spend time with her many friends both in Wisconsin and her winter home in Scottsdale, Ariz. The laughter and fun-loving personality of her childhood came to full fruition in her later years.

Her greatest devotion was to her Lord and her family. She had a special love and bond with her grandchildren and greatgrandchildren. Every moment spent with them was precious to her. In 2005, weeks before suffering congestive heart failure, she made the trip to Japan to witness her grandson’s wedding.

Survivors include four children: Larry (Jane) Shaver of Hingham, Jane (Dave) Soerens of Neenah, Steven (Jane Brasser) Shaver of Farmington, Minn., and Martha “Marti” Devadatta of Naperville, Ill.; eight grandchildren: Jen (Joel) Sohre, Josh (Jun) Shaver, Julie (Joe) Draves, Tim (Cote) Soerens, Matthew (Diana) Soerens, Andrew (Anne) Soerens, Christopher Devadatta and Rachel Devadatta; 12 great-grandchildren: Kaelyn, Kendall and Luke Sohre; John and Jeremy Shaver; Maria, Simon, John Paul, Anna and Thomas Draves and Lukas Soerens and Zipporah Soerens; four sisters: Dorothy DeMaster, Eunice (Jim) Heistand, Mary (Tom) Stonesifer and Ruth Zimmerman; two sisters-in-law, Delores Back and Margaret Quade; one brother-inlaw, Joe (Vicki) Shaver; and also survived by nieces, nephews, extended family and caring friends.

She was preceded in death by her husband, John in 2002, her brother, Ray Ten Haken; sister, Carol Buitendorp; and three brothers-in-law: Delmar DeMaster, Howard Back and Jerry (Gertrude) Shaver.

Funeral services will be held at 11 a.m. Thursday, April 24, at the Hingham Reformed Church. The Rev. Steven Bakker, pastor of the church, will officiate. Burial will be in the Hingham Cemetery.

Friends may call at the CHURCH on Wednesday, April 23, from 4-7 p.m. and on Thursday morning from 10 a.m. until the time of services.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in Marge’s name.
