Tigers knock off state champs Ozaukee in double overtime

FREDONIA – Freshman defender Malayna McDaniel converted a penalty kick in the 96th minute to give the Howards Grove Tigers a dramatic 2-1, double-overtime win over defending Division 3 state champion Ozaukee here Tuesday evening.

The Central Lakeshore Conference rivals batted to a 1-1 tie through regulation. The match remained knotted through the first 10-minute overtime period.

Warrior goalkeeper Kaylee Klopp got both hands on McDaniel’s shot but the ball deflected into the net with four minutes left in the second overtime. The penalty kick was awarded after Ozaukee was called for a handball in the penalty box.

The Tigers upped their CLC-leading record to 5-0 (7-1 overall). Ozaukee, the reigning league champion, slipped to 4-2 in the CLC (6-3 overall).

Freshman midfielder Kaitlyn Near’s goal in the 16th minute gave HGHS a 1-0 lead which held up through the first half. Freshman forward Emma Schmid assisted on the goal.

The Warriors tied the game on a goal by Emily Janke six minutes into the second half.

Howards led 7-6 in shots on goal. Tiger freshman goalie Olivia Stauss made five saves and Klopp had five.

“The teams played in some tough [rainy] conditions tonight. We were persistent and found the goal in the first half but didn’t come out with that same intensity in the second half,” said Tiger head coach Todd Fischer.

“The girls showed their character in the game as they entered overtime and never gave up.”
