Panthers lose tough one to EWC leader

CAMPBELLSPORT – Plymouth battled all the way against unbeaten Campbellsport but came up shy, 2-1, in a terrific pitchers’ duel here Friday evening.

The Cougars raised their firstplace Eastern Wisconsin Conference softball mark to 10-0 (11-0 overall). The Panthers slipped to 5-4 in the EWC (8-4 overall) and 4½ games behind Campbellsport.

The game featured 2013 All- EWC first-team pitchers Brianna Gruenwald of Campbellsport and Rachel Romps, PHS. Romps twirled a three-hitter but took a tough-luck loss. She allowed only one earned run and one walk while striking out four.

Gruenwald fanned 11 batters, walked one and gave up one earned run on only five hits.

The Cougars scored the eventual winning run in the bottom of the fifth on a double by Cheyanne Renderman. An infield error by PHS caused the run to be unearned.

PHS took a 1-0 lead in the second when it executed a doublesteal between Jordyn Pieper and Vanessa Arbuckle, with Pieper scoring from third base. Pieper and Arbuckle had singled earlier.

“Rachel pitched a great game – allowing only four baseunners,” said PHS head coach Gale Grahn.

“We played a strong, spirited game but just came up a little short.”

Pieper led PHS in hits with two. Hailee Walsh had an RBI single in the fourth for the Ciugars which tied the game, 1-1.
