Panthers finish unbeaten in dual play

PLYMOUTH – The Plymouth Panthers climaxed their Eastern Wisconsin Conference boys tennis championship season with an undefeated dual record as they routed Chilton, 6-1, here Thursday afternoon.

PHS, which clinched its second straight EWC title earlier last week, finished 9-0 in league duals for the second straight year. The Panthers racked up an impressive 54 points (one point awarded for each individual match win in league duals) to easily lead the field.

The Panthers ended the regular season with a 10-0 dual record.

“I am so proud of this team. They have persevered through horrible weather and some adversity, so it was nice to get this win under our belts and set our eyes toward next week,” said Panther head coach Clare Sedlacek after the meet.

“Our senior players were our strength today. They are showing a lot of maturity and tenacity in their matches, especially Cooper and Gabe Guiriec.”

The Panthers open the postseason with Division 2 subsectional play Tuesday, May 27 at Ripon College, starting at 9 a.m.

“Senior Cooper Ebbott, pressed into service at No. 1 singles because of Matt Primozic’s absence, outlasted a very strong Evan Greuel, 6-7 (4-7 tiebreaker), 6-4, 6-3. A great match by ‘Coop’,” said Sedlacek.

Gabe Guiriec also pulled out a three-set win for the Panthers. He defeated Ryan VandenBoom 6-1, 2-6, 6-4 at No. 2 singles.

“Gabe really showed a lot of heart after being down two breaks in the third set. He just kept chipping away, taking one point at a time, and was able to run out five straight games to beat a very tenacious opponent,” said the coach.

Plymouth’s No. 1 doubles team of seniors Steven Blend and Ben Bachmann finished EWC play with an 8-0 record after a 6-2, 6-2 victory. The brother combination of Gabe and Gavin Binversie finished 9-0 in league action at No. 2 doubles with a 6-0, 6-0 sweep. Gabe is a sophomore and Gavin a freshman.

PHS seniors Matt Matz and Thomas Theisen ended league play with a 5-0 mark at No. 3 doubles after their 6-0, 6-0 rout.
