Special ‘History on the Move’ program scheduled at Sheboygan Historical Center

History on the Move, sponsored by the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center, continues with a special presentation to be held at Mead Public Library, 710 North Eighth Street, Sheboygan on Saturday, June 21, 2014. The topic for this presentation is Time In Hell, the Battle for Buna on the Island of New Guinea. Richard Stoelb, author of the book of the same name will be the speaker. The program runs from 10:30am to 12:00pm in Mead’s Rocca Room.

Time in Hell is the story of Company F, 127th Infantry, 32nd Division, Wisconsin National Guard who left Sheboygan, Wisconsin for Federal Service on October 20, 1940. They would fight in the Battle for Buna on the island of New Guinea against the Japanese in World War II. They would suffer heavy losses and give much, but they would meet success.

After the bombing of the American fleet at Pearl Harbor on December 7, 1941 the Japanese rolled unchecked through the Pacific. By the middle of 1942 they were threatening Australia. They had to be stopped and the task would fall on the soldiers of the 32nd, on the shoulders of the guys from Wisconsin and Michigan. Company F, 127th Infantry from Sheboygan would find themselves right in the middle of it. This is the story of that littleknown, but very deadly campaign, which helped turn the tide in the Pacific and end the war.

Eleven young men from the Sheboygan area sacrificed their lives in this campaign: Lester Holst, Robert Keitel, John Hermann, Bernard Stegemeyer, Lester

Vanderweele, Warren Schneider, Verlin Norgaard, Victor Felde, John Bainbridge, William Fale and Ray Scherhaufer, all casualties.

Mr. Stoelb, son of soldier Roland Stoelb, will tell the story of the boys from Sheboygan. This is not to be missed.

This program is filled with compelling images and amazing facts. For questions call the Research Center at 920-467-4667, or check the Sheboygan County Historical Research Center on Facebook for updates. This presentation is open to the public. There is no charge.
