Panthers up EWC mark to 3-0

PLYMOUTH — Aggressive baserunning paid off for the Plymouth Panthers as they edged Kewaskum, 3-1, in baseball action Thursday evening at the PHS diamond.

The Panthers upped their Eastern Wisconsin Conference record to 3-1 (5-1 overall). The Indians slipped to 1-2 in the EWC (1-5 overall).

PHS grabbed a 1-0 lead in the bottom of the first inning. Clay Henning and Tyler Willeford drew back-to-back walks to start the frame. Zac Cain followed with a line-drive out to left field, advancing the runners to second and third bases. Luke Held then hit a sacrifice fly which drove in Henning.

The Panthers added two runs in the second to pad their lead at 3-0. Matt Olig led off with a walk. One out later, Cole Karczewski reached first on an infield error which advanced Olig to second.

Olig and Karczewski executed a double-steal of third and second, respectively. When the Indian third baseman misplayed the catcher’s throw trying to nab Olig, the PHS runner scored and Karczewski took third. Justin Picard followed with a sacrifice fly which knocked in Karczewski.

“We were alert and aggressive on the bases,” said PHS head coach Butch Cain.

“We hit the ball hard but right at people. We took advantage of walks and found a way to win.”

1 PHS mustered only three hits but walked six times and had three steals.

PHS starting pitcher Jake Richards earned the win. He allowed one earned run on three hits with six walks and five strikeouts in five innings. Olig earned a save with two scoreless innings, including fanning the side in the seventh. He gave up one hit and no walks while striking out four.

“Defensively, we were pretty solid and our pitching stood out,” said Cain.

The Indians scored in the sixth on Matt Hetebrueg’s single. Kewaskum, which loaded the bases with only one out before the RBI hit, had a runner thrown out at home trying to score on a wild pitch. Olig recorded a strikeout which ended the frame.

Neither team had any batters with multiple hits. Indian starting hurler Dean Schlice took the loss – allowing three runs (one earned) on one hit with five walks and a strikeout in three innings.
