Resorters nearly earn upset win in regional

STURGEON BAY – Underdog Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah gave Sturgeon Bay all it could handle before falling, 3-2, in Division 4 girls regional soccer first-round play here Thursday afternoon.

The No. 3-seeded Clippers went on to upset No. 2-seeded Valders, 2-0, in the finals Saturday. Sturgeon Bay improved to 8-9-2.

Elkhart, the No. 6 seed, ended its season with a 6-10 mark.

The girls fought to the end. I am very proud of the way we played and what we accomplished this year,” said Resorter head coach Kevin Ruh whose team won four more matches than last season.

The Clippers led 1-0 at halftime. The Resorters tied the game, 1-1, on a goal by freshman forward Camrie Schmitz.

Sturgeon Bay responded with two straight goals to go up 3-1.

“Down 3-1, the girls fought back. Monica Ruh made a great pass to Camrie that she made a great shot on [for the goal],” Ruh said.

The Resorters led 19-13 in shots on goal. Elkhart freshman goalkeeper Taylor Porter made 10 saves.

“Taylor played a good game as did our defense. We let two simple/ fundamental plays beat us,” said coach Ruh.

“Meghan Clemens and Jessa Feldmann played almost the entire game on defense – holding their positions and directing others.”
