Flames roll past Benders in league play

The victory upped the Flames’ Northern Division record to 4-2 in the Land O’ Lakes Baseball League (10-4 overall). Plymouth is in third place, one game behind front-running Port Washington (5-1). West Bend fell to 0-6 in league play.

DuCharme ripped a two-run double in the bottom of the first inning which gave the Flames a 3-0 lead. He drilled a two-RBI double in the sixth to climax a fourrun outburst as Plymouth upped its lead to 9-3.

Schro- eder had RBI singles in the first and sixth. Schroeder and Paul Gloede finished the game with two RBIs each. Gloede, DuCharme and Eric Heidenreiter contributed two hits apiece.

Dusty Medved and Schroeder paced the Flames in runs with three each. Dave Stecker led in steals with three.

Four errors by the Benders led to six unearned runs by Plymouth.

Rookie Matt Rhude was the winning pitcher – throwing a solid seven innings. Rhude allowed five runs (three earned) on nine hits with 10 strikeouts and only one walk. Ryan Wachter closed out the game with two scoreless frames – giving up no hits and walks while striking out one.

“Matt pitched well early. He didn’t have as much command [of his pitches] later in the game,” said Plymouth player-manager Rick Meyer.

Rhude blanked West Bend on only two hits through four innings.

“Mike, Matt, Paul and Eric hit the ball well,” said Meyer.

“ I ’ m pleased so far with our season. We’ve had good balance – pitching and hitting.”

Dane Blake, who played at Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah High School, led the Benders in hits with three. Billy Anderson and Tate Rose had two each. Anderson had a team-high three RBIs.

Josh Schneider, who also played at Elkhart, was the losing hurler. Schneider allowed 11 runs (five earned) on eight hits with eight walks and 10 strikeouts in seven innings.
