Cain ignites Panthers’ EWC rout

Zac Cain was 3-for-3 with four RBIs to power the Plymouth Panthers to an 11-1 thumping of the visiting Kiel Raiders in baseball action Tuesday evening.

Tyler Willeford was 2-for-2 with a walk and a team-high three runs for the Panthers who improved their Eastern Wisconsin Conference-leading record to 5-0 (9-1 overall). PHS pounded out five extra-base hits, led by Willeford with a triple and double, and Cain with two doubles.

“We started out a little slow but _ our patience [at the plate] paid off and we hit the ball hard. We had clutch hitting,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain whose team has won seven straight.

PHS, which led only 2-1 through four innings, exploded for five runs in the bottom of the fifth and four in the sixth to win by the 10-run rule. Cain’s two-run double ignited the fifth. Luke Held and Luke Hojnacki had one RBI each in the frame.

In the sixth, the Panthers had an RBI double from Jack Sacket and run-scoring singles by Clay Henning and Held.

Held contributed two RBIs in the game. Cole Karczewski scored a team-high two runs.

Senior Matt Olig was the winning pitcher. Olig threw four innings and allowed one unearned run on five hits with no walks and six strikeouts. Drew Schweiger picked up a save with two scoreless innings. Schweiger surrendered no hits, walked one and had zero strikeouts.

“Matt and Drew pitched well with not too many walks. Except for the error, our defense was stellar,” said coach Cain.

“Luke Hojnacki made some nice plays at third base. Clay Henning played well at shortstop.”

The Raiders (0-4 in the EWC, 2-5 overall), score in the first. Tanner Woepse hit a leadoff single and scored when Eric Weber’s single was misplayed by the center fielder for a two-base error.

Woepse paced Kiel in hits with two.
