Sloppy defense plagues Resorters

ELKHART LAKE – Oostburg took advantage of shoddy defense by Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah to outlast the Resorters, 15-10, in a Central Lakeshore Conference baseball game here Friday night.

The loss dropped the Resorters’ CLC record to 1-4 (1-5 overall).

“We played well enough of- fensively to win the game but we struggled defensively,” said Resorter head coach Davin Hill.

“We had eight or nine defensive errors which gave Oostburg plenty of extra outs in order to score the runs they needed to in order to beat us.”

The Flying Dutchmen blew the game open with six runs in the top of the seventh inning to mount a 15-6 lead. Oostburg led Elkhart in hits, 14-10, and scored eight unearned runs.

Elkhart’s attack was led by Tyler Schultz, Max Kossman and Gunnr Johnson with two hits each. Schultz and Kossman had a teamhigh two RBIs apiece. Johnson scored a team-high three runs.

Starting pitcher Brennan Cain took the loss. Cain allowed eight runs (two earned) on five hits with four walks and four strikeouts in four innings.

In CLC play Thursday, Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler routed the visiting Resorters, 15-0, in 4½ innings (run rule). Calvin Stefanczyk pitched a two-hit shutout with seven strikeouts.

Phil Case had two hits and Paul Vicente, two RBIs, to lead the Crusader offense. Vicente also had a team-best three runs.

Stephan Clemens and Trevor Rebedew had one hit each for Elkhart. Schultz, who started, took the loss.
