Panthers hold off Kewaskum for EWC win

KEWASKUM – Plymouth mounted a 9-1 lead and then staved off a late comeback by Kewaskum to notch a 12-8 baseball win here Tuesday evening.

The Panthers, winners of 10 in a row, raised their Eastern Wisconsin Conference-leading mark to 8-0 (12-1 overall). The Indians fell to 3-4 in the EWC (3-8 overall).

PHS scored in every inning but the seventh. Kewaskum tallied four in the bottom of the fifth and three in the sixth to cut the Panthers’ lead to 12-8. PHS relief pitcher Luke Hojnacki, who came on in the sixth, threw a scoreless seventh to close out the win.

“The guys came out of the gate pretty hard. This was a good victory for us,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

“We let them back in the game a bit but persevered and never panicked.”

Senior Jake Richards started on the mound for PHS and had a solid performance in posting the win. Richards surrendered one run (earned) on four hits with three walks and two strikeouts in four innings.

“Jake did a nice job. He kept the ball down in the zone and moved the ball around well,” said coach Cain.

The Panthers banged out 10 hits, led by Matt Olig, Richards and Tyler Willeford with two each. Clay Henning, Zac Cain and Richards had a team-high two RBIs apiece.

Leading PHS in runs with two each were Cole Karczewski, Olig, Richards, Hojnacki and Cain with two each. The Panthers swiped six bases, paced by Hojnacki’s two.

Kewaskum pitching allowed six walks to go with four strikeouts.
