Huskies fall shy in state title match

MILWAUKEE — Another one-goal game for the New Holstein Huskies and this time the outcome was not to their favor.

Mary Sigler scored on a breakaway with just under six minutes left and it proved to be the game winner as Wisconsin Rapids Assumption edged the Huskies, 2-1, for the Division 4 championship Saturday at the WIAA State Girls Soccer Tournament at Uihlein Soccer Park in Milwaukee.

Laiken Meyer celebrated her birthday, giving New Holstein (18- 4-3) a 1-0 lead late in the first half, assisted by Kelsey Berchem.

Assumption (21-3-1) tied it nine minutes into the second half as Jasmine Hunn scored to make it 1-1. Sigler then had her score 25 minutes later.

The match was similar to the first time these schools met. That was in the 2011 state semifinals when Assumption scored with just seven seconds left to win 1-0.

New Holstein’s girls soccer team sure has a flair for the dramatics. Just five days after a Danielle Brenner penalty kick sent the Huskies to their fifth state tournament appearance with a 1-0 double-overtime win over Howards Grove in the sectional finals, it was Karli Fannin’s turn to be the hero.

Her goal with under four minutes left broke a 1-1 tie and the NH defense took over from there as the Huskies beat Racine St. Catherine’s, 2-1, in a state tournament semifinal match Thursday at Uihlein Soccer Park.

“I didn’t even think about it,” said Fannin about her game winner.

“I saw the ball, stuck my foot out and it went in. I had no time to settle ball and I did with my left foot.”

St. Catherine’s came in as the top-ranked team in Division 4.

“We kept passing the ball forward and when we started passing side to side, things began to happen,” said Husky head coach Nate Laabs after the win over St. Catherine’s.

The Huskies were 15-0-3 in their last 18 matches before the state finals, with their last loss coming on April 29 to Eastern Wisconsin Conference champion Plymouth.

Danielle Brenner’s goal tied the match, 1-1, in the second half after the teams played a scoreless first half.
