Plymouth’s Neils nets 14 in all-star hoops game

WISCONSIN DELLS – Kollin Neils of Plymouth scored a team-high 14 points for the North which lost to the South, 89-83, in the Wisconsin Basketball Coaches Association Division 2 All-Star game Saturday at the Justagame Fieldhouse.

Neils, the Panthers’ all-time leading scorer, was the Eastern Wisconsin Conference’s Player of the Year and a WBCA D-2 all-state honorable-mention pick this past season. The South outscored the North 23-12 in the fourth quarter to erase a 71-66 deficit.

The WBCA All-Star series of games for both boys and girls (in divisions 1-5) featured many of the top seniors from the 2013-14 season. The girls games were held Friday and the boys contests on Saturday at Justagame.

Neils, a 6-foot-2 guard at PHS, was 5-for-12 from the field overall and hit two three-point shots, and was 2-for-2 at the free-throw line. He also contributed two rebounds and a pair of assists. Seymour’s Sandy Cohen tallied 12 points for the North.

Reed Timmer of New Berlin Eisenhower exploded for 30 points to spark the D-2 South squad. Donovan Jackson of Milwaukee Pius XI poured in 25.

“I thought I played pretty decent. It was a great team to play with,” said Neils.

“It was definitely a good time getting to know the other players on both teams and making friends.

“I played point guard and did pretty well. It was definitely an honor to play in this game. It was a great experience.

“This was the Division 2 elite class [playing] and it was fun to compete against the best. It was cool to put on the basketball shoes one more time [in high school competition] and represent my school, community and family,” said Neils.

Neils will play college football at defending Division III national champion UW-Whitewater. He decided to gray-shirt this upcoming season in which he will be ineligible to play. However, he will then have four years of eligibility at quarterback, starting with the 2015 season.

Tyler Zastrow, a Sheboygan Lutheran graduate, had nine points and a team-high four assists to help the South all-stars defeat the North, 85-70, in the D-5 matchup. The South outscored the North 46- 29 in the second half after trailing 41-39 at halftime.

CJ Usadel of Sheboygan North played in the D-1 girls contest and tallied three points for the North team which downed the South, 68- 61.
