Riverdogs’ rally comes up short

Reklaitis earned a 7-4 win. — Photo by Jodi Steines WEST BEND – The West Bend Benders built a 5-1 lead and then staved off a comeback by the Howards Grove Riverdogs to earn their first Land O’ Lakes Baseball League win of the season, 5-4, here Saturday afternoon.

The Riverdogs scored three runs in the top of the seventh inning to pull within 5-4. Ashton Holzman’s two-run double keyed the rally.

Howards put runners at second and third at the start of the ninth but were unable to score.

The Riverdogs slipped to 3-6 in the Northern Division (4-7 overall). The Benders improved to 1-9 in divisional play.

Howards’ 10-hit attack was led by Brady Callahan, Cole Reinemann, Bryce Skelton and Trent Keitel with two each.

Billy Anderson cracked three hits to pace West Bend. Dane Blake contributed two hits, including an RBI single which helped spark a three-run third that gave the Benders a 3-0 lead.

Blake and Josh Schneider, the winning pitcher, played high school baseball at Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah.
