Falcons’ Heili no-hits Panthers

PLYMOUTH – Senior Nate Heili fired a no-hitter as the Sheboygan Falls Falcons earned a key 5-1 win over the Plymouth Panthers in baseball action here Tuesday evening.

Heili, 6-0 overall, struck out five, walked three, hit a batter and allowed no earned runs. The Falcons improved to 10-2 in the Eastern Wisconsin Conference (13-4 overall) and moved to within one game of first-place PHS which is 11-1 (16-4 overall).

“Heili attacked the zone well tonight. We hit to the opposite field well and that allowed the success we needed,” said Falcon head coach Ryan Fladvid.

“It’s a battle whenever these two clubs meet. I’m glad we came out on top tonight. We’ll just have to keep playing hard.”

Heili helped his own cause with a two-run homer in the top of the second inning which gave the Falcons a 4-0 lead.

Falls grabbed a 2-0 lead in the first on RBI singles by Mike Raeder and Joe Van Engen. Kyle Peterson’s run-scoring single in the sixth gave the Falcons a 5-1 cushion.

“Heili moved the ball around well and didn’t let us square up on anything,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

“We hit the ball hard and they made plays on defense. I give credit to Heili and his defense.”

Heili sparked Falls’ offense with three hits and a team-high two runs. Raeder and Peterson contributed two hits apiece.

PHS scored its run in the fifth which made it 4-1. Luke Hojnacki reached first on a throwing error by the shortstop and advanced all the way to third on a wild pitch. Cole Karczewski’s sacrifice fly drove in Hojnacki.

Jake Richards took the loss – starting and pitching 5-2/3 innings. Richards allowed five earned runs on seven hits with three walks and three strikeouts. Clay Henning threw 1-1/3 scoreless frames and gave up one hit and a walk to go with one strikeout.

“Richards and Henning pitched well enough to win. They were pretty solid,” said Cain. “Our defense was solid [PHS committed zero errors].

“We still have the upper hand in the conference. We’ll play one game at a time.”
