Tigers sweep Crusaders, clinch share of CLC crown

The Tigers won, 7-5. — Review photo by Greg Ceilley SHEBOYGAN – The Howards Grove Tigers swept a doubleheader Thursday against host Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler, 7-5 in eight innings and 3-0, to clinch at least a share of the Central Lakeshore Conference baseball title.

The Tigers improved to 14-0 in the CLC (15-2 overall). The second place Crusaders dropped to 10-4 in the league (10-8 overall). Both teams have four CLC games remaining.

In the opener, senior Terry Fritsch hammered a two-out single into the gap in right-center field which drove in three runs in the top of the eighth and gave HGHS a 7-4 lead. The game was the completion of the opener of the scheduled twinbill on June 30. The game resumed Thursday with the score 4-4 in the top of the eighth.

Edge, the winner, started and went 5-1/3 innings – allowing five hits and one walk while striking out four. Fritz pitched 1-2/3 frames with two walks and a pair of strikeouts to post a save.

“Austin located the ball well and got huge outs when he need to. To shut them out at their place was huge,” said Tiger head coach Mark Weber.

“These are big wins for us. I was extremely happy with the kids. Everyone contributed.”

In game one, the Tiger tallied two runs in the fourth on RBI singles by Brad Olson and Travis Stanczyk. HGHS added a run in the seventh on Fritz’s single.

Edge led the Tigers in hits with two. Calvin Stefanczyk paced the Crusaders with two hits.

Stefanczyk took the loss – allowing two earned runs on five hits with two walks and seven strikeouts in six innings.

GAME ONE

Edge was also the winning pitcher in the opener. He gave up five runs (two earned) on five hits with 10 walks and three strikeouts in going the route.

The Crusaders rallied for two runs in the seventh to knot the game, 4-4. HGHS led 4-2 after scoring four runs in the fourth.

The Tigers had only two hits but drew 10 walks. HGHS had no batters with more than one hit. Stefanczyk led the Crusaders’ attack with two hits.

“Edge pitched great and Terry came up with the big hit. Our team really rose to the occasion in this one,” said Weber.

Edge pitched out of a basesloaded jam in the eighth after yielding an RBI single by Stefanczyk.

“It was pretty exciting,” said Fritsch about getting the gamewinning hit. “I felt confident at the plate.

“Top to bottom, this was a team effort,” he said.

“Terry’s hit was huge. I’m proud of him,” said Weber.

Noah Fink was the losing pitcher. He started and went 7-1/3 innings – giving up five runs (three earned) on one hit with eight walks and eight whiffs.
