Flames rally for huge win over Mercs

CEDARBURG – Dave Stecker scored on a two-out error in the top of the 10th inning to give the Plymouth Flames a 5-4 win over Cedarburg in a key Land O’ Lakes Baseball League Northern Division game here Sunday afternoon.

The Flames moved into second place in the division at 8-4, only one-half game behind defending champion Cedarburg which is 8-3. Plymouth, 14-7 overall, has beaten the Mercs twice in three meeting this season.

Stecker drew a one-out walk in the 10th and advanced to second base on a wild pitch. One out later, Jake Klemme hit a smash on the ground to the shortstop who mishandled it which allowed Stecker to score.

“It was a good game. This is a huge win for us,” said Rick Meyer, the Flames’ player-manager.

The Flames rallied from a 3-0 deficit. Mike DuCharme’s home run in the sixth cut the deficit to 3-1. Plymouth tallied three runs in the seventh to grab a 4-3 lead. DuCharme rapped a two-run single and Paul Gloede stroked an RBI single.

The Mercs tied the game, 4-4, in their half of the seventh with an unearned run as they cashed in on two Plymouth errors. Matt Behling’s grounder plated the run.

Stecker earned the win after coming on in the ninth and pitching two scoreless innings. He wiggled out of a jam in the ninth. The Mercs had runners at first and second with two outs when Stecker got Nick Boehnlein to pop out which ended the game.

“Dave did a nice job in relief. He threw strikes and we played good defense,” Meyer said.

Stecker walked one, allowed no hits and had one strikeout.

Matt Rhude was the Flames’ starting pitcher and threw eight innings. Rhude gave up four runs (three earned) on seven hits with three walks, a hit batter and one strikeout.

“Matt kept his composure and kept us in it [game],” said Meyer.

“We didn’t get down and we kept battling [after trailing 3-0].”

The Flames pounded out 12 hits but stranded 14 baserunners. Gloede had a team-high three hits. Stecker, Rhude and DuCharme cracked two hits each.

DuCharme led Plymouth in RBIs with three. Stecker scored a team-high two runs.

The Mercs had zero batters with multiple hits.

Taylor Piel took the loss in relief. Piel went three innings and allowed one run (unearned) on one hit with two walks and five whiffs.

Merc starting hurler Joe Daniels gave up four earned runs on 11 hits with five walks and six strikeouts in seven frames.
