Panthers cruise, keep sole lead in EWC race

NEW HOLSTEIN – Matt Olig threw a one-hit shutout and Zac Cain had a team-high five RBIs as the Plymouth Panthers stayed atop the Eastern Wisconsin Conference baseball race with a 14-0 trouncing of New Holstein here Tuesday evening.

The Panthers improved to 14-1 in the EWC (19-4 overall) and are one-half game ahead of secondplace Sheboygan Falls. The Falcons upped their league record to 14-2 with a doubleheader sweep over Kiel, 15-5 and 5-2, Tuesday night.

PHS closes out its EWC schedule with three games this week. The Panthers will play at Two Rivers Thursday, July 10. A suspended game will start at 5:30 p.m., followed by the regularly scheduled contest. Friday, the Panthers will host Campbellsport at 5:30 p.m. at the PHS field.

Olig walked only one and struck out three. The lone hit by the Huskies was a one-out single in the top of the third inning by Jacob Kaiser. The game was called after five innings due to the 10-run rule.

Cain also rapped out three hits which led the Panthers along with Clay Henning. Luke Held had two hits and three RBIs. PHS pounded out 13 hits.

Olig drove in two runs. Henning scored a team-high three runs, followed by Tyler Willeford, Cain and Jake Richards with two each.

PHS blew the game open with an eight-run fourth. The big hits were a three-run triple by Cain and a two-run homer by Held.

“Matt did a nice job of mixing his pitches and the defense made plays behind him. He has stepped up big-time for us this season,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

Olig, a junior, is in his first season as a varsity pitcher.

“We came out hungry and got on the board early which was big,” said coach Cain.

PHS grabbed a 1-0 lead on Cain’s double which knocked in Henning who had lashed a leadoff two-bagger.

“We were able to get guys on early and apply pressure with some good hitting. We had a very good performance.”

The Huskies fell to 6-8 in the EWC (8-15 overall).

Justin Weber was the losing pitcher. Weber started and went 3-1/3 frames – allowing 10 runs (all earned) on 11 hits with three walks and one strikeouts. Cody Muellenbach pitched the final 1-2/3 innings and gave up four earned runs on two hits with two walks, a hit batter and one whiff.
