Takeovers

To the Editor,

Do you get the feeling that too few people control too much of the money and power in our state and country these days?

From phone companies to factory farms and corporations that are now considered “persons” we are slowly being swallowed by a giant greed machine.

Privatizing public schools was an important part of Republican’s legislative agenda these past four years, another extremely troubling example of corporate takeover.

Wisconsin was the first state to have voucher schools and now it is spreading statewide with still no comparable accountability demanded of public schools…all supported by my local legislators’ votes and Governor Walker’s signature.

Besides vouchers, Republicans proposed a new kind of charter school system. At present, charter schools are overseen by local school boards. Under proposed Senate Bill 22 new charters would have been overseen by a nine-member board appointed by the governor.

That statewide board would supersede the role of local school boards, and could approve schools over local dis- tricts’ objections.

Thank goodness SB22 was stopped...but you can be sure it will appear again in the near future!

New kinds of charters and expanding vouchers, is not about education…it’s about money, profit-making, and religious support.

Disingenuous legislators and our governor can’t pretend to strengthen education as they dismantle our state’s largest democratic institution.

Martha Laning, with her business background, finds it very concerning that expanded new charter school proposals and voucher expansion creates more overhead costs by just having more schools and it diminishes public school funding. Besides... vouchers do not improve anything… as shown in Milwaukee.

Citizens are urged to give careful consideration to what is happening to Wisconsin public education. Pay special attention to how the 9th District senate candidates’ experiences, record, and views show support for a quality public school system.
