Richards powers Panthers to rout

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

PLYMOUTH – Senior Jake Richards fired a threehit shutout and sparked the Plymouth Panthers’ attack as they cruised past West Bend East, 12-0, Wednesday evening at Loebe Field.

The nonconference baseball win upped the Panthers’ record to 20-4 and extended their winning streak to four. The Suns slipped to 12-13.

Richards walked only one and had two strikeouts. The game was called after 4½ innings due to the 10-run rule.

“Jake had an outstanding performance on offense and pitching. He allowed his defense to make plays,” said Panther head coach Butch Cain.

“The team played well overall. Up and down the lineup, everybody contributed.”

Richards had a team-high four RBIs and three hits. Luke Held and Luke Hojnacki added two hits each. Hojnacki was second in RBIs with three.

PHS pummeled the Suns’ pitching for 10 hits. Held and Richards paced PHS in runs with three apiece. Tyler Willeford and Hojnacki contributed two runs each.

The Panthers put the game away early – erupting for four runs in the top of the first and five in the second to mount a 9-0 lead. The key blows in the first were a two-run single by Richards and a two-RBI double by Hojnacki.

Richards’ two-run double ignited Plymouth in the second. Hojnacki and Cole Karczewski added run-scoring base hits.

“We had a great two-strike approach at the plate to get hits,” said Cain.

“Luke Hojnacki stepped up in the clutch and also played a solid third base. Luke Held contributed on offense and played well on defense [at catcher].”

Held threw out a runner trying to steal second.

The losing pitcher was starter Zach Biermann who allowed five runs (all earned) on three hits with three walks and one strikeout in 1-1/3 frames.
