Leander J. “Lanny” Schirmer, a resident of Rocky Knoll Health Care Center, died early Saturday morning, July 26, 2014, at the age of 82.

Lanny was born March 13, 1932, son of the late Al and Anna (Jank) Schirmer.

Lanny married Beverly Gahagan on Oct. 23, 1954, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Plymouth. Bev preceded him in death Oct. 29, 2004.

They had three sons, Lonny, Ronny and Patrick. Lanny owned and operated Schirmer’s Garage and started his own business, LJ Schirmer Excavating Inc., by selling his stock car to purchase his first Cat. The business is now known as PRL Excavating after his three sons. He worked very hard establishing these businesses and enjoyed working with his sons, and was very proud of them.

He also enjoyed his time at the Waldo Café, Nap’s Place and Fudgienuckles with his family and friends. He appeared rough on the outside, but had a heart of gold and would help anyone in need. He will be dearly missed.

Lanny is survived by two sons, Lonny (Jeri) Schirmer of Plymouth and Patrick (Linda) Schirmer of Plymouth; 11 grandchildren: Lanny Lee, Randy, Josh, Nick and Matt Schirmer; Shaun, Shane and Shannon Schirmer; and Jaimie Lynn, Janelle and Emily Schirmer; and five greatgrandchildren.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Bev; a son, Ronny “Smiley” Schirmer; and three brothers, Jim, Tony and John Schirmer.

Private family services will be held Wednesday, July 30, at the Woodlawn Cemetery in Plymouth with the Rev. David VanDixhorn officiating.

Schneider Funeral Home has been entrusted with the arrangements for Lanny.

“Life goes on.”

The family would like to thank Dr. Curtis Hancock and all the staff at Rocky Knoll for their care and compassion given to Lanny “Buck” during his three-year stay.
