Lionel P. Hellmer, age 80, formerly of Cascade, passed away early Sunday morning, Aug. 10, 2014, at Anita’s Garden (Arbor View) in Plymouth where he had been a resident for the past four years.

He was born Dec. 22, 1933 in the town of Lyndon, Wis., a son of the late Gaylord and Marguerite (Haefner) Hellmer. He attended Webster Grade School in Cascade and Plymouth High School.

He served in the U.S. Army from November 1956 until August 1958.

On May 3, 1958, he married Joan L. Karls at Holy Rosary Catholic Church in New Holstein. The couple resided in the town of Lyndon after their marriage. Joan preceded him in death Feb. 24, 2002.

He was a member of Shepherd of the Hills Catholic Church in Armstrong.

He worked/operated on the family homestead with his father for many years. He later worked at Borden’s Foods in Plymouth. He became a business agent for the Local Teamsters Union 56 and later became secretary/ treasurer before retiring in January of 1989.

Lionel was an avid Brewer fan and enjoyed his trips to various casinos.

Survivors include six children: Brian (Ann) Hellmer of Cascade, Stuart (Marcia) Hellmer of Cascade, Brenda (Bruce) Friederichs of Plymouth, Shelby Hellmer of Plymouth, Sheila (Brian) Hemb of Cleveland and Brent Hellmer of Plymouth; 12 grandchildren: Kristin Friederichs of Plymouth; Kyle (Chelsea) Friederichs of Plymouth; Karly, Kevin and Korey Friederichs of Plymouth; Carissa and Jonah Hemb of Cleveland; Justin (Morgan) Hellmer of Plymouth; Joshua (fiancée, Jennifer) Hellmer of Wauwatosa; Lindsay (Shawn) Baumhardt of Howards Grove; Jeremy Hellmer of Plymouth and Stephanie (Jesse) Huettl of Cedar Grove; three greatgrandchildren: Madison, Cooper and Landon; one brother, Richard (Racheal) Hellmer of the town of Mitchell; one sister, Marilyn (William Jr.) Miller of Random Lake; two sisters-in-law, Karen (Maurice) Germain of Chilton and Darlene Rach of Kohler and special friends, Allen and Mary Ann Berth of Cascade. He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and many friends.

He was preceded in death by his motherand father-in-law, Gilbert and Matilda Karls; one brother-in-law, James Rach; and two nephews.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 6:45 p.m. Thursday, Aug. 14, at St. Michael’s Catholic Church in Parnell. Father Charlie Westor will officiate. Burial will be in St. Michael’s Catholic Cemetery in Parnell.

Friends may call at the Suchon Funeral Home in Plymouth on Thursday from 3-6 p.m.
