Minimum wage

To the Editor,

Is it fair for a CEO who makes $17,000,000 a year to pay $8.80 an hour to employees? How about taxpayers footing an average yearly bill of $900,000 at one large store to give those employees food and housing assistance?

Entrepreneur Nick Hanauer talked recently on C-SPAN about income inequality, and how raising the minimum wage in Seattle is jump-starting the economy there. You can watch at

The Center for Economic and Policy Research says that 13 states that raised the minimum wage saw faster economic growth. Growth in Wisconsin is stagnant and is lagging behind the rest of the Midwest.

600,000 Wisconsinites would benefit from an increase in the minimum wage! Business owners don’t really know how to calculate an increase in business when more people have money to spend at their businesses. Henry Ford took this chance, and it paid off.

Martha Laning and Mary Burke know an unfair situation when they see it. They will work to give hard-working Wisconsinites the raise they deserve. Most people believe that raising the minimum wage is the right thing to do, and these strong women will work in a bi-partisan way to get the job done.
