Jaryd learned of the program while searching online for actuary workshops, then secured a recommendation from PHS business teacher June Winkel and completed an application. The 20 participants, who were from New York, Illinois, Wisconsin and Missouri, were chosen from their applications and received full scholarships to the program covering room, board and tuition.

The program provided a special opportunity for the students to compete in a week-long challenge, held at the Katie School of Insurance on the ISU campus in Bloomington, Ill. Divided into teams of four, students assumed the roles of senior risk management professionals and were asked to guide their team “corporation” through a mine field of potential disasters.

The winning team was determined by which corporation generated the most profit by the end of the week. Jaryd’s corporation, called “Shock The World,” took first place in the competition.

All students who completed the program received a certificate of completion from the school and a $500 scholarship to ISU. The program was sponsored by contributions from State Farm Insurance and Country Financial.
