ALVERA “VERA” ZWART

Alvera Eleanor Zwart was born April 28, 1934 in Sheboygan Falls, Wis., the daughter of Ellis and Arlie (Vergowe) Debbink. She died Sunday, Aug. 17, 2014, at St. Simeons Episcopal Home in Tulsa, Okla. She was 80 years of age.

The former Miss Vera Debbink was a 1952 graduate of Oostburg High School. While attending school, Vera rode eight miles to and from on her bicycle to attend her piano lessons. Another love of Vera’s was spending time with her father in the barn of their dairy farm, as a child.

She met her husband, Dick, while both were employed by Bemis Mfg. They married on April 23, 1955 in Gibbsville, Wis. That year they packed up their few belongings in a U-Haul trailer and headed to Tulsa, Okla., to establish their new life, where Dick pursued a career in drafting. They moved to Broken Arrow, Okla., in 1969 where they designed and built their home. They were married for 59 years before Dick preceded her in death July 11, 2014.

Vera was employed by Broken Arrow Public Schools for 20 years, as a teacher’s aide, secretary and in the Public Relations Department, having retired in 1989.

Dick and Vera were members of the Late Great Chevy Club for 29 years.

Vera was an active member of First United Methodist Church, continuing her love of music by playing for the gathering time before the service each Sunday.

She enjoyed being outdoors, spending time with their collies, working in her flower garden and was a member of the Rose Garden Club. She liked to walk and read, spend time with her family and watch her grandchildren grow.

She is survived by daughters, Sherry and husband Larry Dukes, Broken Arrow, and Renee and husband Scott Anderson, Coffeyville, Kan.; sons, Jeff and wife Kathy Zwart, Broken Arrow, and Mike Zwart, Broken Arrow; grandchildren, Tony and Kristina, Emily, Mandy, Keith, Stacey, Leah and Philip, Kisha, Jodie and Brendon, Chelsi; great-grandchildren, Alex, Audri, Aleena, Skylar, Charley; sisters, Carolyn VanDrist, Oostburg; Beverly Potter, Oostburg, and Nancy Rauwerdink, Oostburg; and brother, Donnie Debbink, Sheboygan Falls.
