Resorters earn big comeback win in debut

BOWLER – The Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah Resorters stormed back from a 20-0 deficit to edge Bowler/Gresham, 32-28, in a Great 8 Conference eight-man football game here Friday night.

The contest was the season opener for both teams.

Senior quarterback Elliot Van Oss scored the winning touchdown on a 10-yard run with about two minutes left which gave the Resorters a 32-28 lead.

The Resorters then had to hold off a last-minute drive by the Panthers to secure the victory. Senior linebacker Trevor Rebedew made a game-saving tackle at the Elkhart 7-yard line on a run by halfback Zachary Olson as time expired.

“We battled back very nicely. I was very proud of the team at the end,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann.

“It was an overall team win. I was very pleased overall.”

Elkhart was down 20-0 in the second quarter before rallying for 26 unanswered points to go up 26- 20 after three periods. Sophomore running back Jared Shaw returned a kickoff 77 yards for a touchdown to kick-start the comeback.

Shaw followed with a 24-yard TD reception from Van Oss which shaved the Panthers’ lead to 20-14.

Van Oss scored Elkhart’s next two TDs on dashes of 45 and 40 yards, respectively, which put his team up 26-20.

The Panthers regained the lead, 28-26, when Olson hit paydirt on a 4-yard run.

Van Oss sparked the Resorters’ offense with an impressive 209 yards rushing and three TDs.

“Elliot ran hard and we blocked real well. Trevor Rebedew [running back] made some key blocks,” said Feldmann.

“Bowler/Gresham is tough. They outsized us but we were quicker which was crucial for us. They got a little tired toward the end.”

Feldmann thought several young players, who didn’t have any varsity experience going into the season, stepped up and contributed well.

“We grew up as we went along,” he said.

The coach thought Rebedew and linemen Izaiah Annis and Hunter Schoenborn played well on defense. Linebacker Gunnr Johnson made a fumble recovery for the Resorters.
