Edward Owen “Ned” Skavlem passed on Friday, April 4, 2014 in Southlake, Texas.

He was born in Janesville, Wis., on Sept. 13, 1924, to Thea and Owen Skavlem. Ned moved to Plymouth in 1936 when his parents purchased the Ben Franklin Store. He graduated from Plymouth High School in 1943 and joined the Navy.

He served in the Navy Medical Corps during World War II in the Seattle area.

He graduated from the University of Wisconsin in 1950, during which time he married his high school sweetheart, Virginia Mae Gessert. They moved to Seattle in 1951 where he thoroughly enjoyed the Pacific Northwest lifestyle of sailing, skiing and hiking. Ned remarried in 1960 to Shirley Ann Olsen.

Ned slowly retired from Biddle & Crowther Medical Supply Co. of Seattle in the 1990s – not wanting to give up work that he greatly enjoyed. In retirement he loved to travel and visit his daughters, their families and always loved to play with their dogs.

Ned is survived by his two daughters, Karen Hammond of Normandy Park, Wash., and Terrie (Charles) Frahm of Southlake, Texas; four grandchildren and four great-grandchildren.

Donations in his memory may be made to: The Seattle Animal Shelter Foundation, P.O. Box 99006, Seattle, WA 98139-0006.
