Panthers second in Sheboygan South Invite

PHS lost a heartbreaker to Sheboygan North in the championship match, 1-0. The winning goal was scored by Nicolo Vitale.

Both teams had three shots on goal. Panther senior goalkeeper Drew Schweiger made one save.

The Panthers finished 2-1 in the tourney. They defeated Brown Deer, 2-0, in the first round and edged Oostburg, 1-0, in the semifinals.

The Howards Grove Tigers competed in the White Division and posted a 1-2 record. HGHS opened with a 5-0 drubbing of Kenosha St. Joseph. In the semifinals, the Tigers were routed by North, 10-0.

“We were better. We created more opportunities to score, we just could not finish,” said Panther head coach Rommy Herrera about the North match.

“North had a good opportunity and they scored on it. The [PHS] team created opportunities and possessed well.

“The team played very well, defensively and offensively [in the tournament],” added Herrera whose team is 2-2 on the season.

Junior midfielder Ryan Holec and senior forward Zach Gambrell scored one goal each for PHS against Brown Deer. Gambrell assisted on Holec’s tally. Michael Bolland had the assist for Gambrell’s goal.

PHS led Brown Deer in shots on goal, 5-3. Schweiger made three saves.

Antonio Cambise, a senior midfielder, kicked the game-winning goal for PHS in the Oostburg game. The Panthers led 5-2 in shots on goal. Schweiger had one save.

HOWARDS GROVE RESULTS

Junior forward Derrick Grimm and junior midfielder/forward Ben Dehne scored two goals each to lead the Tigers past Kenosha. The Tigers led 5-0 at halftime.

Devin Gallenberger tallied the other goal for HGHS on a direct kick. Grimm had a team-high two assists and Gallenberger contributed one.

The Tigers led 10-2 in shots on goal. HGHS goalies Caleb Holzman and Hunter Voss were credited with two saves apiece.

“The boys possessed the ball well against Kenosha St. Joseph and took advantage of the opportunities,” said Tiger head coach Todd Fischer.

In the North match, the Golden Raiders attempted 12 shots on goal and held HGHS to zero. Holzman and Voss made one save each.

“We were overwhelmed by the tempo of the game and skill of a Division 1 school. It was a good test for us and gives us plenty to work on,” said Fischer whose team is 2-1-1 this season.

Oostburg was 5-for-5 on penalty kicks in the shoot-out win over the Tigers. Scoring penalty kicks for HGHS were Grimm, Carson Teske, Gallenberger and Dehne with one each.

The Tigers held a 5-2 lead in shots on goal. Holzman and Voss made one save each.

“We started a bit sluggish but picked up our tempo and possession as the game progressed. We are looking forward to seeing them in conference play,” said Fischer.
