Huskies win EWC opener over Falls

The New Holstein/Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah Huskies bolted to a 3-0 lead only 22:18 into the first half to fuel a 5-1 win over visiting Sheboygan Falls in boys soccer action Monday night.

The match was the Eastern Wisconsin Conference opener for both teams. The Huskies improved to 3-2- 1 overall. Falls is the defending EWC co-champion.

Junior midfielder Zach Petrie and junior forward Jacob Conrad spearheaded the Huskies’ attack with two goals each. Midfielder Jacob Starnitcky, a sophomore at Elkhart, scored the team’s other goal.

Sophomore forward Tyler Schultz, an Elkhart student, paced the Huskies in assists with two. Sophomore goalie Jordan Bahr from Elkhart made three saves. NH/EL-G led 18-4 in shots on goal.

Austin Martinee kicked the Falcons’ goal.

“Our team really proved a lot tonight. To take on one of the defending co-champions from last year in our first conference game of the year and come out on top is quite a step,” said Husky head coach Nate Laabs.

“We had allowed quite a few goals up until tonight but we finally found a back-line combination that worked well together. Our midfield did a great job of passing the ball and our possession really took the intensity out of their game.”

Last weekend, the Huskies played in the Central Wisconsin Christian Invitational at Waupun and finished 1-1-1. The Huskies’ win was against Green Bay Northeast Wisconsin Lutheran, 7-0. Joe Baldwin and Schultz led NH/EL-G in scoring with two goals each.

The Huskies lost their season debut to Winnebago Lutheran Academy, 4-1, on Aug. 19. They bounced back with a 4-2 win over North Fond du Lac on Thursday.
