“Why is your calf named Sucky?” asked Danielle Navis, Fairest of the Fair.

“Because she likes to suck on me!”

“My calf’s name is Firecracker!”

“And why is your calf’s name Firecracker?” asked Navis.

“Because she was born on the fourth of July!”

And so it went this past weekend at the Sheboygan County Holstein Association Farmerbud Showmanship event, during the Sheboygan County Fair in Plymouth.

This event is always well attended by entries and their families.

The groups are divided into three according to age and the calves must be born between June 1 and Sept. 1.

The Farmerbud Showmanship is an opportunity for youth younger than 9 years of age to begin showing dairy cattle in a fun and supportive environment.

The Junior Holstein Association strives to increase knowledge and provide opportunities to youth by involvement through a registered Holstein project.

As in the 4-H program, there are multiple opportunities to match non-farm youth with farm owners to participate through a managerial dairy project.

Judge Todd Wendorf from Oconomowoc gave the group pointers to help them become good handlers in the years to come.
