Pewaukee wins LOL baseball title

Pewaukee successfully defended its Land ‘O Lakes Baseball League title in the grand championship playoffs with a 5-2 win over host New Berlin in the finals Monday afternoon.

The Cedarburg Mercs, who won the Northern Division, were eliminated in the playoffs with a 10-4 loss to Pewaukee (Western champion) Sunday afternoon. The win by the Muskies advanced them to the championship game.

New Berlin (Eastern champion) advanced to the finals with a 3-1 victory over Burlington (Southwestern winner) Saturday afternoon.

Eric Schmitz struck out 10 batters en route to the win in the championship game. Greg Harder keyed the Muskies’ attack with three hits.

In the Cedarburg game, the Muskies scored five runs in the bottom of the sixth inning to build a 6-1 lead. Pewaukee had only one hit in the frame but was aided by two Cedarburg errors.

Ross Zahour and Justin Stiever paced the Mercs in hits with two each. Pewaukee was led by Tom Zimmerman and Nick Wichser with two hits apiece. Brock Guetzke earned the win and Zach Lauterbach took the loss.
