The Resorters improved to 2-0 in Great 8 Conference South Division football play and 4-0 overall after a 73-6 rout. Stockbridge fell to 0-2 in the division and 0-4 overall.

Elkhart dominated the game in all aspects and scored touchdowns in all phases of the game. The Resorters’ first five scores were all of a different variety. All in all the team ended the game with 10 touchdowns – six rushing, two kickoff returns, one punt return and a defensive fumble-recovery return. Adding to the scoring mix was a field goal, a safety and six kicks for an extra point.

“This is the most athletic team I have ever had,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldman.

“Stockbridge is young. Most of their team are freshman and sophomores but I am happy with the way we played.”

Stockbridge received the opening kick and could only manage 2 yards of offense before punting the ball to the Resorters. Elkhart’s first play from scrimmage, a 42-yard TD run by Jared Shaw, was only the beginning of things to come.

By the time the Resorters’ offense returned to the field, Elkhart Lake had a 22-0 lead, achieved by Trevor Rebedow’s 38-yard punt return for a touchdown on the Indians’ second offensive drive, a safety after the Stockbridge punter stepped out of the back of the end zone during a punt attempt and a 75-yard kickoff return by Shaw following the Stockbridge safety.

As the second quarter began, Logan Knepfel kicked a 27-yard field goal, giving the Resorters a 25-0 lead. At that time, the coaches agreed to play the balance of the game with a running clock.

One of the few highlights for the Indians came on the next drive as quarterback Sam Jeffers ran 64 yards for a touchdown on third down and nine. Even with the long run, Jeffers was held in check with 55 yards rushing on 22 attempts.

“We knew about him [Jeffers]. We watched film and knew he was their best runner,” Feldman explained.

The long touchdown run and running clock could not slow down the Resorters’ onslaught as Shaw returned the following kickoff 74 yards for a TD and 32-6 Elkhart lead.

Throughout the third and fourth quarters the Resorters’ offense and defense continued to pressure the Indians. Elkhart scored touchdowns on four running plays in the second half and shut out the Stockbridge offense.

“We were able to play all of our kids tonight. The young kids got a lot of time,” said Feldmann.

“We will look at the film and correct the technique of the play- ers. You have to stay on the kids, especially the young ones, about technique and keep improving.”
