Experience, athleticism boost Elkhart’s hopes

ELKHART LAKE – Look for the Elkhart Lake-Glenbeulah girls volleyball team to be improved over last season, bolstered by good experience and athleticism.

The Resorters, who finished eighth in the Central Lakeshore Conference with only a 2-14 dual record, return nine letter winners from last season. Heading the group is junior outside hitter Rachael Flora who earned All-CLC honorable mention last year.

Flora had 60 kills, five solo blocks, 170 digs and 22 ace serves in CLC play as a sophomore.

“I am optimistic for the season as we have a team full of very good athletes. The girls are receptive to the changes we have made and they have a desire to be great,” said new Resorter head coach Jim Brown who took over for Terri Huether.

“Our strength is our athletic ability and coachability. Our weakness is our cohesiveness, at least right now, but it is getting better and will continue to get better.

“We are also learning new terminology and a new system, so it takes time,” Brown said.

“We will be young. We have many good players and some quality veteran players but we are still very young.”

The Resorters, who graduated only one senior from last year’s squad, have four sophomores and only two seniors.

Brown expects the following key players to lead the team: senior Meghan Clemens, juniors Flora, Emma Feldmann and Emily Holzmann and sophomore Claire Feldmann.

Brown thinks playing as a team is the main key to having success this season.

“We want to be at our best in late October [in the postseason] and play as a team and with passion all year,” he said.

Brown expects defending champion Oostburg and Howards Grove to be the leading contenders for the CLC title. Oostburg, which also won the league tournament last year, lost three All-CLC first-team players to graduation.

HGHS finished second in the league’s overall race and tourney. The Tigers return two All-CLC first-team players in seniors Autumn Risch and Ali Schueler.
