Laning

To the Editor

Recently, I had the opportunity to knock on doors with candidate Martha Laning. She is running for the 9th Senate District seat. It was interesting listening to the conversations she had with folks that answered their door.

Public education was one of several topics discussed. Folks realize the importance of supporting quality public schools. There was agreement on adequate funding and there are concerns about the challenges our public schools are facing.

Martha described herself as a fiscal conservative who knows we have limited funds to work with given all the needs in this state. But she believes that funding public education is an important priority investment in improving our economy. She believes the state cannot afford to fund another alternative school system like it is trying to do now with the expanded voucher program. We must also replace the loss of revenue for education because of providing private school tuition tax credits.

It was sad to hear folks talk about losing their jobs and now work in low wage temp jobs. The over $2 billion in business tax cuts over 4 years has not created the promised 250,000 good jobs. Martha knows that the only way to get our economy working again is to cut through the partisan gridlock and invest in education, infrastructure, innovation, and the workers and entrepreneurs that are the lifeblood of Wisconsin.

From the visits we had door-todoor, I sensed that people want elected representatives to work together. Find common ground on the issues and come up with compromises that deal with the important issues facing this state. Martha has the kind of life experiences to be that kind of representative in Madison. I urge all citizens to learn more about her candidacy like the folks did who met us.

Sincerely,
John Binder
