Elkhart upped its first-place South Division record to 4-0 and improved to 6-0 overall. The Challengers slipped into a three-way tie for second in the division at 2-1 and fell to 4-2 overall.

“When push came to shove, we buckled down. We played with more intensity in the second half,” said Resorter head coach Barry Feldmann.

“We [Elkhart’s coaches] challenged the offensive line and the defense at halftime and they rose to the occasion.”

In the final half, Elkhart’s offensive line opened up nice holes for the running backs and the Resorters’ defense put more pressure on quarterback Clint Keaveny which slowed down the Challengers’ passing attack.

Elkhart’s vaunted ground game, with the three-headed monster of running backs Jared Shaw and Trevor Rebedew and quarterback Elliot Van Oss, exploded for 376 yards. The speedy Shaw led the way with 140 yards and three touchdowns. Rebedew powered his way for 137 yards and two TDs, and Van Oss added 99 yards and two scores.

“We have good running backs, a good offensive line and a good quarterback,” said Feldmann. “Brock Bonebrake, our fullback, always does a good job of blocking.

“Jared and Trevor are an awesome 1-2 punch. Trevor is the grinder and Jared is smooth and easy.”

Feldmann thought senior lineman Nick Miller showed a lot of leadership on offense and defense and sparked both units in the sec- ond half.

“Nick put it on his shoulders in the second half and sparked the defense,” said the coach.

Miller had two quarterback sacks, one of which caused a fumble which teammate Owen Kalbacken recovered in the second quarter. Elkhart’s defense forced two other turnovers – a pair of interceptions by Shaw in the second half.

Shaw’s first pick was huge as it thwarted a scoring threat by the Challengers after they had recovered an onside kick to start the second half. Elkhart only led 20-12 at halftime.

After recovering the kickoff, the Challengers struck quickly when Keaveny threw a 44-yard pass to Obi Iwuagwu to the Elkhart 11- yard line, Two plays later, Shaw intercepted a pass at his 5 and returned it 35 yards.

“This is a great team win. We turned it around in the second half,” said Miller. “We finally decided to be aggressive.

“The offensive line did a great job. Hunter Schoenborn and Owen Kalbacken were doing great work in there,” said Miller.

“The offensive line did pretty good,” said Rebedew. “Without them, there’s no way we would be running the way we are now.”

“We played pretty well overall,” said Van Oss. “Our offense and defense picked it up in the second half.”
