VIRGINIA MERTES

Virginia Mertes, 85, of Sheboygan entered into eternal life Sunday, Oct. 5, 2014, at her home.

Virginia was born Oct. 21, 1928 in Sheboygan, Wis. She was the daughter of the late Gillis and Pieternella (Lampers) Roelse.

On Aug. 14, 1948, she was united in marriage to Gilbert Mertes in Sheboygan. The couple were married for 66 years.

Virginia was a full-time wife, mother and homemaker. Until the loss of her vision, she loved to knit and crochet. Through her church family, she was known as “The Card Lady.”

She is survived by her husband, Gilbert; sons, Bob (Pat) of Plymouth, Jim (Betty, friend), Sheboygan and daughter, Betty (John) Grothe of Plymouth; eight grandchildren, Fran O’Brien, Kim (Brian) Kotlowski, T.J., Shelley, Karrie, Kris Mertes, Donna (John) Jolley and Leslie (Matt) Sanzo; 12 great-grandchildren, Kaylee, Carson, Kayla, Stephani, Jacob, Dayton, Kyle, Katie, Spencer, Shawn, Matthew and Shylynn; two great-greatgrandchildren, Shana and Brantley; two sisters, Catherine (Gerald) Lilyquist and Dorothy (Brad) Canterbury of Sheboygan; two brothers, Edwin Roelse of Chattanooga, Tenn., and Donald Roelse of Sheboygan; sisters-in-law, Diane, Kathy, Louise, Gladys “Toots” and Kim; brother-in-law, Aaron “Butch” (Shirley); one aunt and many cousins, nieces and nephews in Holland, Canada and the United States.

She was preceded in death by her inlaws, Ray and Elva Mertes, and two sisters, two brothers, two sisters-in-law and five brothers-in-law.

Family and friends may gather at First Reformed Church in Sheboygan Falls, 527 Giddings Ave., from 4 p.m. until the time of service. Funeral service will be held at 6 p.m. Friday, Oct. 10, at the church with Pastor Brad Veenendaal officiating. Burial will take place at Greenlawn Memorial Park in the town of Sheboygan.

A memorial fund in Virginia’s name has been established for missions, WVCY and RBC Ministries.
