To the Editor,

With political campaign costs in astronomical figures, the dominance of special interest groups, prevalence of one-issue voters, gerrymandered legislative districts, clandestine voter suppression activities, and the seemingly void of any in-depth substantive discussion of the major issues facing our society, recruitment of the best candidates for public office can be difficult.

With the above mentioned realities, as well as the volume, complexity, and magnitude of our problems, persons who are intelligent, well-educated, thoughtful, and have an ability to work with others and bring people together, too often shy away from this seemingly overwhelmingly bad political environment.

With the challenges facing education, the environment, creation of a positive job and business climate, the decay of our infrastructure, and scores more of today’s issues, we really do need the best and brightest people to run and be elected to serve us.

In the 9th State Senate District, one candidate stands out as eminently qualified to hold that office, and that person is Martha Laning.

Martha brings to her candidacy a strong business background, having worked for two Fortune 500 companies; her masters degree in finance; and, a track record of community involvement.

In our dysfunctional world of government today, we need someone who does not offer more gridlock, but has demonstrated she can work with all people; one who will be part of the solution to get government which shows little knowledge and understanding of the actual problems facing our society, and ultimately just contributes to more divisiveness.

That is not the case with Martha Laning. She knows that we must continue to have quality educational opportunities at all levels; invest wisely to maintain our infrastructure; value our natural environment for health and recreation purposes; and, accomplish these goals with a fair tax structure for individuals and businesses.

Martha is a thinker, a hard-worker, and has the skills and will to tackle the problems which confront us.

She offers a stellar resume’ of education, work experience, knowledge, and a track record of working with others which we should look for and expect in our elected officials. The choice in the 9th Senate District on Nov.4th is an easy one, Martha Laning.
