Burke, Laning

To the Editor,

Governor Walker and his supporters are trying to convince us that he has turned Wisconsin around and that we are going in the right direction.

The following facts, how- ever, do not add up to “the right direction” in my book.

A recent article in the Appleton Post-Crescent cited census information revealing that from 2010, when Governor Walker took office, to 2013, the poverty rate in Wisconsin rose from 10.4 to 13.5 percent.

Over the same period, child poverty rose from 13.3 to 18.4 percent.

Likewise, students eligible for free or reduced lunch rose statewide from 41 to 46 percent.

Median household income in Wisconsin also fell significantly between 2010 and 2013, census information shows.

In 2010, median household income was $54,210; in 2013, it was $51,467 (adjusted for inflation), a five percent decrease.

If you’re doing well under Walker’s policies, that’s great. But look around you; many are not. Right now, over 750,000 Wisconsinites live in poverty.

Is this the right direction?

When I see the “I Stand with Walker” signs in people’s yards, I can only ask “Why?”

His ethics are questionable, his environmental policies are toxic, and his economic initiatives have taken us backwards. It doesn’t add up to the right direction.

On the other hand, Mary Burke, gubernatorial candidate, and Martha Laning, candidate for State Senate, are in favor of raising the minimum wage because municipalities and states that have done so have experienced economic boons.

They are committed to decreasing college student debt because doing so will infuse money into the economy.

They will not turn down federal money for things like rail and Medicaid expansion, which will create jobs and benefit thousands of people.

Vote on November 4 for a change of direction: Mary Burke and Martha Laning.
