Huskies net big upset in regionals

APPLETON – The New Holstein/Elkhart Lake- Glenbeulah Huskies posted one of their biggest boys soccer wins ever as they upset No. 1-seeded and perennial power Appleton Xavier in the Division 3 regional finals here Thursday afternoon.

The match was deadlocked at 1-1 through 90 minutes of regulation play and two 10-minute overtime periods which forced a shoot-out. The No. 8-seeded Huskies outscored Xavier, 4-3, on penalty kicks in the shoot-out.

NH/EL-G, 15-5-3, advances to the sectional semifinals Thursday at No. 4-seeded Luxemburg-Casco (17-4-2) at 4 p.m. The Spartans edged Plymouth, 1-0, in a regional final Thursday.

Xavier, ranked No. 5 in the Wisconsin Soccer Coaches Association D-3 poll, finished 12-8-3.

Scoring one shoot-out goal each for NH/EL-G was Josue Valenzuela, Zach Petrie, Jacob Starnitcky (EL-G student) and Joe Baldwin. Sophomore goalkeeper Jordan Bahr (EL-G student) made two huge saves in the shoot-out which saw the Huskies rally from a 3-1 deficit. Baldwin’s goal gave NH/EL-G a 4-3 lead and clinched the victory.

“We battled against a very quality team today. To upset a No.1- seeded team with the history of Xavier at their home field is one of the biggest wins in our team’s history,” said Husky head coach Nate Laabs.

“Our team fought with incredible determination today.”

Ethan Hartwig, a junior midfielder/defender, scored the Huskies’ goal in regulation, giving NH/EL-G a 1-0 lead at the 6:04 mark in the first half. Baldwin was credited with an assist.

The Hawks tied the match on a goal by Seth Theilig with only 11:34 left to play. Sam Tschimperle had an assist.

Bahr made an impressive 11 saves. The Hawks dominated in shots on goal at 12-3.

“Our team fought with incredible determination today. They [Huskies] played excellent defense and always believed they could win,” said Laabs.

“Our back line of Noah Ruh, Max Kossman, Ethan Webber, Perry Balazs and Jacob Conrad played exceptional. Jordan Bahr was outstanding in goal.

“It was very fitting that our only senior, Joe Baldwin, stepped up with the season on the line and delivered – earning us back-toback regional titles,” added Laabs.

Ruh and Kossman are EL-G students.
