Words of wisdom from one of history’s great politicians

A hard fought election is just days away as I write this column and it may well be published after the votes are final - unless a recount is required in one or more of the races.

Elections, as many of us know, can have major effects on our lives, our children, education, environment, work/safety and countless other things we consider important.

It is also true here and elsewhere around the world. So, I thought it might be interesting to share some thoughts and words from Winston Churchill, quotes that might make one think beyond our mirror, reflections of one of the remarkable men in history who had a way with words.

It comes from Quotes World, collected by Vivek Chanti and published on July 20, 2014. A few of Churchill’s quotes, and he has countless others, are as follows:

- Democracy is the worst form of government except all those others that have been tried.

- A pessimist sees the difficulty in every opportunity; an optimist sees the opportunity in every difficulty.

- The farther backward you can look, the father forward you are likely to see.

- History is written by the victors.

- Healthy citizens are the greatest asset a country can have.

- The best argument against democracy is a five-minute conversation with the average voter.

- It is not enough that we do our best; sometimes we must do what is required.

- A lie gets halfway around the world before the truth has a chance to get its pants on.

- Success is not final, failure is not fatal: it is the courage to continue that counts.

- We make a living by what we get. We make a life by what we give.

- Don’t interrupt me while I’m interrupting.

- The greatest lesson in life is to know that even fools are right sometimes.

- The price of greatness is responsibility.

- I have nothing to offer but blood, toil, tears and sweat. (Part of historic speech given at a critical time during World War II).

- We can always count on the Americans to do the right thing, after they have exhausted all other possibilities.

To find many more quotes on Winston Churchill, just do a web search.

Other updates: - On Tuesday evening, Nov. 4, 6:00 p.m. the Sheboygan County Board of Supervisors will meet and finalize its 2015 budget. Then, within a couple of months, the process will begin for the following year’s budget.

- The Friends of the Sheboygan Marsh committee continue to work on the development of a new multi-purpose building at the Sheboygan Marsh.

The building will provide a modest meeting room, youth educational environmental study room, and separate camping and visitor toilet facilities.

Additionally, the “Friends” group has gathered a team of volunteer experts that have been working to develop a fully “green” building. They are close to the point where outside energy use (heat, light) will be near zero.

That’s something that businesses and individual homeowners will likely want to review to see if they can use some of these ideas for their own business or home.
