Five Tigers on All-CLC first team

by Greg Ceilley of The Review staff

Five Howards Grove Tigers earned All-Central Lakeshore Conference football first-team honors for the 2014 season in voting by the league coaches.

Named to the offensive unit are senior wide receiver Ethan Brinkman and senior interior lineman Evan Kleuger. Brinkman was a unanimous choice. On the defensive team are junior interior lineman Alex Navis, senior linebacker Trent Beninghaus and senior back Zach Fritz.

Brinkman was a second-team pick last year. Klueger moves up from the second team as a junior. Fritz was an honorable-mention defensive back in 2013.

Klueger was also voted to the honorable-mention defense at end. Beninghaus also earned secondteam recognition as an interior lineman on offense. Fritz also earned honorable mention as a wide receiver.

The Tigers’ other all-league players include:

Offense – senior Jonah Gerber, tight end, second team; junior Brad Olson and senior Alex Strege at running back, honorable mentiomn; senior quarterback Luke Stanczyk, second team; senior place-kicker Dakota Rabe, honorable mention; and defense – senior end Willie Goedeke, second team; senior interior lineman Drew Akright, honorable mention; Stanczyk and Olson, honorable-mention linebackers; and senior back Andrew Reinemann, honorable mention.

“Alex was a very hard worker in the off-season and it proved very valuable during the season,” said Tiger head coach David Schmid.

“He was very tough to move and was quick off the ball. He was equally stout at the point of attack as he was pursuing from the backside.”

Schmid was impressed with Fritz’s tackling prowess.

“Normally we don’t like our free safety making many tackles because that means we let the ball carrier get through our front eight. When that happened occasionally, I could always count on Zach to stop the runner in his tracks. But most of the time he played like an extra linebacker,” said the coach.

ALEX NAVIS ALEX NAVIS “Trent received the most points from the CLC coaches for linebackers and was voted defensive MVP [Most Valuable Player] by our team. He was the heart and sole of one of the best defenses I’ve coached at Howards Grove.

“He rarely wanted to come out even though he started at guard for us as well. He has great size and quickness in the box. He ran through blockers to the ball carrier. His biggest asset to the team with his heart and determination.

“I was worried about Evan being represented on the all-conference team because he was hurt for half of the conference season with a torn ACL. I was pleasantly surprised when the conference coaches had so much respect for him and his work ethic that they voted him first team,” Schmid said.

“He was the leader of our team even through his injury.

“Another pleasant surprise in the voting by the conference coaches. Ethan did not have the stats that he did last year, partly because we ran more and partly because opposing coaches knew they could not let him take over the game offensively.

“He is very explosive and one of the fastest athletes in the conference. He can take any pass or kick return and turn it into six points with his athletic ability. Ethan always put the team ahead of himself,” said the coach.

Brinkman tied for second in the CLC in receptions with 13 (11.0- yard average per catch) and had one touchdown.

Gerber tied for fifth in catches with 10 (17.6 average) to go with two TDs.

Stanczyk ranked No. 1 in the league in completion percentage with an impressive 64.0 and was second in passing yardage with 426. He threw for four TDs.

Fritz led HGHS in solo tackles with 37 for the overall season.

The only first-team repeaters are senior running back Aaron Chier and senior defensive end Brett Michaels of Cedar Grove-Belgium. Chier was second in the CLC in rushing with 889 yards, finishing behind Caleb Kelley of Sheboygan Lutheran/Kohler/Sheboygan Christian who totaled 1,126.

Chier scored a league-high 104 points, including 17 TDs (all rushing).
