Bemis claims SCEDC Economic Driver of the Year Award

BEMIS BEMIS Bemis Manufacturing Co. of Sheboygan Falls was honored with the 2014 Economic Driver of the Year Award at the 2014 Sheboygan County Economic Development Corp. (SCEDC) Annual Meet Wednesday, Nov. 19, at Blue Harbor Resort in Sheboygan.

Bemis CEO Richard Bemis accepted the award on behalf of the company, which employs over 1,600 people.

Bemis’ new product line of all-plastic shopping carts were on display at the event. The carts are currently in use at Festival Foods stores.

SCEDC Executive Director Dane Checolinski stressed the importance of attracting new potential workers to fill available positions in the county.

Checolinski reported that the SCEDC has reached 80 percent of its goal of creating or retaining 3,500 jobs in Sheboygan County, including 851 newly created jobs and 1,995 retained jobs.

He also presented a five-point strategy to aid recruitment and retention of labor throughout Sheboygan County.

2015 PGA Championship Director Jason Mengel discussed preparations for next year’s event at Whistling Straits Aug. 10-16.

He stated that advance ticket sales are well ahead of the previous PGA Championships held over the past decade.

Mengel predicted that the PGA Championship and 2020 Ryder Cup at Whistling Straits will have a major impact on the local econRICHARD omy.
