The council passed a resolution thanking Nicolaus for his service and calling his “contribution to municipal government ... an indication of his pride in our state and our community.”

With nearly 20 members of the department on hand in uniform, Nicolaus told the council and the audience, “I just did my duty to the city that I felt I needed to do. To be honest, I was just one of the players, but I can’t do it alone. These guys (fellow firefighters) work their butts off for the city and town.
