Well, biogas projects go on line

PLYMOUTH – Several major Plymouth Utilities projects are up and running or will be shortly, the City Council learned Tuesday.

John Grosskruetz of Kapur and Associates, the city’s consulting engineers, updated the council on the new water reservoir and well, while Public Works Director Bill Immich reported on the biogas conversion project at the city’s wastewater treatment plant.

Grosskruetz said the new 800,000-gallon water reservoir on the city’s west side went into service Nov. 14 and the entire project is about 95 percent complete.

The only work remaining is the installation of a security fence, which will be going in next week, according to Grosskruetz.

The city’s newest water well, well #17, is 85 percent complete, he added, and start up of the well is scheduled for Dec. 18.

“Both will be on line by the end of this year, serving the city’s growing water needs,” Grosskruetz said.

Immich told the council that the micro-turbines to convert biogas from waste into electricity have been installed at the County PP wastewater treatment plant and are up and running.

“They’re currently operating just using domestic sewage,” Immich said. “The gas being created is enough to run the micro-turbines about 18 hours a day.”

The goal is to eventually enable the system to utilize waste product from local cheese companies. “We’re hoping that will enable us to run (the micro-turbines) at a much higher rate,” Immich stated. “We’re going to be working over the winter on that plan.”

Immich said the total project came in at about the projected cost.

“Once it is up and running, it will provide us with signifi- cant savings,” Immich concluded. “Once the system is paid for (through generated electricity), it will be nothing but savings.”
