Depth sparks Panthers past North

SHEBOYGAN – Strong depth powered the Plymouth Panthers to a 106-78 dual win over Sheboygan North in boys swimming and diving action here Thursday night.

The nonconference victory raised the Panthers’ dual record to 3-1. PHS won seven events and had at least two finishers in the top three in seven of the 12 events.

Junior Ryan Holec anchored all three winning relays (200-yard medley, 200 freestyle and 400 freestyle) for PHS and also placed second in the 200 individual medley.

“A great meet for us Thursday. Pretty evenly-matched teams, however our depth is just a little better as every varsity participant scored points,” said Panther head coach Clare Sedlacek.

“Brent Thiel had a great meet, coming within two hundredths of his PR [personal record] in the 50 butterfl y for the medley relay and another huge drop in the 100 butterfly with 1 minute, 2.27 seconds.”

Thiel, a senior, finished second in the 100 butterfly.

“Our relays were once again our strength as the ‘A’ relays won each event, including the 200 freestyle relay which came down to our anchor leg, Ryan Holec, out- swimming Ben Gerbitz who had previously won the 50 freestyle,” said Sedlacek.

PHS diving coach Greg Heberlein was very pleased with the performances by senior Anghelo Gangano and sophomore Riley Josephs who finished first and fourth, respectively.

“Anghelo had a great night at North with 228.15 points [careerbest for six dives]. He has gotten himself into the level of the big boys. He had a lot of fun.

“Riley had his best meet to date too. He was fourth with 167 points.”

The Panthers won the junior varsity meet, 55-49, despite swimming in only five events. The key to the win was PHS outscoring the Golden Raiders 24-4 in the 200 and 400 freestyle relays by finishing 1-2 in each event.
