George H. “Jack” Nelson, age 94, of Plymouth, WI, passed away late Sunday evening (Dec. 14, 2014) at Rocky Knoll Health Care Facility, where he had been a resident for the past two years and received exceptional care.

George was born on August 18, 1920 in Sycamore, IL, a son of the late Herman A. and Anna V. Anderson Nelson.

He attended school in Sycamore, IL, where he learned to speak English after speaking only Swedish in his home growing up. On May 26, 1943, he married Marion Johnson in Sycamore, IL. They enjoyed 65 wonderful years of marriage, both caring for each other until Marion preceded him in death on May 16, 2009.

Shortly after their wedding, George was sent to war and served in the U.S. Army in the European Theatre during World War II from 1943-1945.

Upon his return from the Army, he and Marion farmed in the Northern Illinois area, raising their four children, and left farming in 1966 when they moved to St. Charles, IL. After 10 years there, they moved to Beaver Dam, WI, and his last employment was with Breuer Metal. He retired in 1986 when they moved to Plymouth, WI.

George was a member of Redeemer Lutheran Church and enjoyed fishing and spending time with his family. He was very proud of his Swedish heritage and his service in World War II.

Survivors include his four children: James (Pam) Nelson of Piedmont, SC; Jeanne Rollo of Sheboygan Falls, WI; Joseph (Robin) Nelson of Howell, MI; and John (Charlene) Nelson of Plymouth, WI.

Eleven grandchildren: Debbie (Jim) Bishop of Hampshire, IL; Mark (Jane) Nelson of Peoria, IL; Glen (Greta) Nelson of Mauldin, SC; Matthew Rollo of Henderson, NV; Heidi Rollo of Sheboygan Falls, WI; Jenny and Brian Nelson of Howell, MI; Brad Nelson of Brighton, MI; Lindsay Nelson (fiancé Calen Leider) of Waldo, WI; Kristin (Joel) Schneider of Wauwatosa, WI; and Todd Nelson of Sheboygan, WI.

Six great-grandchildren: Justine Buchholz of Hampshire, IL; James A. and Lillian Nelson of Peoria, IL; Ava Olivia Soleil Lamb of Sheboygan Falls, WI; Abigail and Eva Nelson of Mauldin, SC.

He is also survived by nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. In addition to his parents and his wife, he was preceded in death by six sisters and one brother.

Memorial Services will be held on Saturday, December 27th at 11:00 a.m. at Salem Lutheran Church in Sycamore, IL. Rev. Mark Nelson, grandson of George will officiate. Cremation has taken place, and inurnment will be in Elmwood Cemetery in Sycamore, IL. Friends may call at the CHURCH on Saturday (Dec. 27) from 10:30 a.m. to the time of service.

In lieu of flowers, a memorial fund is being established in George’s name.
