The loss was the first of the season for the Eagles who were ranked No. 2 in the Associated Press Division 5 poll last week. The Tigers improved to 5-0 in the CLC (5-2 overall). Christian dropped into second place in the conference at 4-1 (6-1 overall).

HGHS had a 9-2 spurt to build a 38-29 lead with only 3:00 left. Five Tigers scored points during the run, capped off by Brittany Schaller’s basket from the perimeter.

The Eagles answered with a 12-4 tear which shaved the Tigers’ lead to 41-42 with 50 seconds remaining. Christian’s pressure defense sparked the comeback as it forced three HGHS turnovers, including one steal each by Olivia Meerdink and Carissa Wisse.

Meerdink was fouled after her steal and then hit both ends of a bonus free-throw opportunity. Wisse’s theft and ensuing assist re- sulted in Hannah Modahl’s layup which climaxed the rally.

HGHS missed the front end of a one-and-one on its next possession but Christian was unable to capitalize as it missed a shot inside. The ball went out of bounds to the Tigers after a scramble for the rebound.

Senior guard Morgan Edge was fouled with 16 seconds left and she calmly sank two bonus foul shots which upped the Tigers’ advantage to 44-41.

Sophomore Kaitlynn Near came through big-time for the Tigers when she blocked a threepoint shot by Modahl with seven seconds remaining. Taylor Bubolz grabbed the rebound for HGHS and was fouled. She made 1 of 2 free throws with 6.5 seconds left which iced the win.

Edge, a senior point guard, was the catalyst for the Tigers with a team-high 17 points and three assists, plus six rebounds and a steal. She scored all eight of Howards’ points in the first quarter on four driving layups.

Sam Yancy, a sophomore forward, led HGHS in boards with 10 and steals, two.

“We played well enough to hang on for win. Edge played an outstanding offensive game. She kept us in the game with several key baskets,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“She is seeing the court and attacking the basket very strong. As a team we played solid overall defense. Yancy hauled in 10 rebounds and kept [Carissa] Wisse off the offensive glass.

Modahl led Christian in scoring with 11 and Wisse had 10. The Eagles missed several shots inside which proved costly.
