Tigers roll past No. 10-ranked Ledgers

HOWARDS GROVE – The Howards Grove Tigers notched their most impressive boys basketball win of the season here Tuesday night with a 64-45 rout over previously unbeaten St. Mary’s Springs (Fond du Lac).

The Ledgers, 5-1, came into the game ranked No. 10 in the Associated Press Division 4 poll. The nonconference victory improved the Tigers’ record to 5-2. HGHS is ranked No. 13 in D-4.

“Anytime you play Springs it’s all about the hustle points, toughness, getting the loose balls and taking care of the ball. I’m really proud of the guys and the way they competed,” said Tiger head coach Eric Worth.

“It was fun and exciting. This is something to build on. I was very pleased overall.”

HGHS broke the game open by outscoring the Ledgers 22- 13 in the third quarter to build a 44-30 lead. Ethan Brinkman hit two three-pointers and Derrick Grimm scored two baskets off his own steals which sparked the Tigers in the period.

“We moved the ball real well in the third quarter. A key in the game was that we were able to keep them out of the middle,” Worth said.

Grimm scored all 14 of his career-high point total in the second half to lead the Tigers who outscored Springs 42-28 in the second half.

Brinkman led the Tiger offense with 19 points and Zach Fritz chipped in with a personalbest 15.

“Andrew Reinemann did a very good job on Cory Nies who was averaging 19 points a game coming in. Taylor Beninghaus’s 11 rebounds [team-high] were huge,” said Worth.

Nies was held to only eight points.

Reinemann, a senior guard, led the Tigers in assists with three and grabbed six boards. Grimm had a team-high three steals.

HGHS outscored the Ledgers 25-8 at the foul line.
