The Wolverines, ranked No. 1 in the Associated Press Division 1 poll, hiked their recored to 11- 0. The Tigers, who had a fourgame winning streak snapped, slipped to 7-3.

HGHS advanced to the finals with a 56-51 first-round win over South on Dec. 26.

Senior forward Ashley Solberg and junior guard Dani Rhodes combined for 19 points in the first quarter to spark West’s attack against HGHS. Solberg scored all 10 of her points in the opening period while Rhodes tallied nine of her game-high 19 points.

The Wolverines outscored the Tigers 24-8 in the second quarter, led by junior guard Christine Allen who netted all nine of her points, to mount a 52-15 halftime lead.

“Against Waukesha West it was truly a case of them being bigger, faster, stronger than us. Dani Rhodes is a special player and their overall physicality was too much for us,” said Tiger head coach Heidi Georgeff.

“We tried a zone but they hit shots. We got outrebounded and didn’t handle their press well.

“We fought harder the second half and did well against their bench players,” said Georgeff.

Brittany Schaller and Morgan Edge led HGHS in scoring with nine points each. Schaller was named to the all-tournament team. Kaitlynn Near paced the Tigers in rebounds with five and assists, two.

HGHS starting forward Sam Yancy didn’t play in the tourney due to a family commitment.

SOUTH GAME

Senior Lyndsay Peterson, a forward/guard, scored 11 points off the bench to ignite the Tigers’ attack against the Redwings. Schaller and Morgan Edge led HGHS in scoring with 15 and 12, respectively.

“We started slow but attacked their zone effectively as the game went on. Peterson’s 11 points off the bench were huge,” said Georgeff.

“We shored some things up on defense and Schaller and Edge continued to lead the charge for us on offense.”

Schaller, who was 7-for-8 at the foul line, had a strong overall game as she also led the Tigers in assists with five and steals, four, to go with five rebounds. Peterson had a team-high eight boards.

Edge and teammate Olivia Stauss had three assists each. Taylor Bubolz and Addi Gerber contributed five rebounds apiece.
